Gold was discovered in Dahlonega in 1828. Visit the Dahlonega Gold Museum and learn about America’s first gold rush! Afterwards, you can see a real stamp mill used to grind the gold dust or take a tour of a former mine. Take home gold “nuggets” and semi-precious gems discovered by panning at one of the following local mines:
Walking tours of the historic district provide insights into the architecture, former inhabitants (ghosts) and history of downtown. Tour brochures are available at the Visitor’s Center.
Chestatee Wildlife Preserve is home to two rare Zedonks (zebra, donkey mix), large cats, and large zoo animals. Visit the North Georgia Zoo and Petting Farm where children can pet or handle exotic animals.The surrounding mountain communities are filled with unusual tourism attractions.
